Along Came Smokey

Molly and Mike are home from their 6 week trek across the US. They drove through the Smokey Mountains and stopped to see a friend in Asheville on their way home. They were on a lonely dirt road in rural Appalacia when they saw an animal barely alive. It turned out to be a young bird dog/hound pup who was starving and severely dehydrated. They took him to an animal hospital for a once-over, got him stable with fluids, and called around to try to find owners. No one has claimed him yet and the local animal shelter would only give him 3 days so he came home to MD. Lucky for Smokey, Molly and Mike start their new job running an animal shelter in Leesburg, VA in two weeks. Meanwhile, he is living with me! He goes to the vet soon for deworming, neutering, and a more in-depth check-up. I wonder how we know if he has had his vaccinations yet? Puppy care is hard work and he has already peed twice on my poor mother's oriental rugs. But look at him!

I love him!! Good work, Mike and Molly, bringing him back. They are two good-hearted folks.
You might want to assume that he did not yet have his shots, considering the circumstances under which he was found.
Are you going to keep him? Or is he Mike and Molly (and Judah)'s? How big is he? Is he scared or does he already love you? Is he a licker? A ball fetcher? A swimmer?
And how did they find/decide on running an animal shelter?? Don't they have a trip blog? Could you put up a link so curious quadbloggers might catch up on their adventures?

Mike wants to keep him so he is Molly, Mike and Judah's dog now. I will take him if they decide not too, but I can't really take a dog until February so they would have to keep him until then and he will probably be all bonded with his new family at that point. So I now have a new nephew doggie.

He is a chewer/biter because he is teething. Its not bad. He has some nice new toys to chew on. He listens pretty well and doesn't seem scared at all. He licks a little bit, but not too much. He loves attention and a comfy spot to lay down. He does not know how to fetch yet. He can't do a lot of very strenuous exercise just yet because he is still recovering from starvation and is badly malnourished. He is so skinny that all of his bones stick out :(. He also probably has worms and symptoms of a UTI. He goes to the vet tomorrow. He did get to meet some other dogs yesterday and tore around the yard at ligthning speed with another hound mix. I think he will get more playful as he feels better. He loves to sit in laps and if you squat down in front of him he does this clumsy thing where he basically walks through you and gets all tangled up on top of you. Its really cute.

They found this animal shelter through a friend of our neighbor. She runs another shelter that is funded by these people in VA. The shelter they will run is a new "branch" (?) and is in part of a country house that has been renovated.

Whew this is a long comment! Finally, here is Mike and Molly's blog: http://mollymikecrosscountry.blogspot.com/
One of our own quadlings makes a cameo!
