I Want To Set My Mother On Fire

So after many months of discussing an all-vegetarian menu for the nuptials, and me actually SENDING OUT a sample menu to my parents/matt's/the chef in June, my parents disclosed today that they think not serving meat is inappropriate. It was actually stated "how can you expect people to drive up here and rent hotel room when you refuse to serve them a proper meal."

I've scouted out about 50 recipes for vegetable-based dishes that I think look fabu. Risottos, gluten-free pasta dishes, polenta-based vegetable mountains... How is eating one meal comprised of vegetables an inconvenience to anyone? I just don't see it. I perceive that it's different. Perhaps unexpected. I just don't see how it is a problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to handle this? NNTM, aka she-who-mingles-freely-with-the-carnivorous-texan-kind? I'm furious and reaching for wine...

rrrrrghhhh Mothers.
Is she paying for it?
What about, when you send out "Save the Date" cards, you enclose a sentence like, "Per the bride's preference we are planning an all-vegetarian menu. Should you have dietary preferences that are not met by this menu please let us know so that we can make appropriate accommodations." You know, basically the reverse of the typical "If you want a vegetarian meal let us know" type of deal.
Yah?

I like that, Abby.

I'm not sure what the protocol is in this situation, Erica, but I want you to stick to your guns. This is your and Matt's wedding! Your mom already had her wedding.

Of course I am biased, but I see nothing wrong with serving a delicious meal that includes protein other than meat/a meat alternative and options for special dietary needs. Anyone who is attending your wedding should respect your life choices. I know the meal is a big part of traditional weddings, but they desirve a wake up call if they are just there for the meat.

I agree with Liz and Abby. It's your wedding. People have met you before. They know that you're not a proponent of purchasing meat. I can't imagine that anyone will, like, walk out of the reception due to lack of animal on the table. And if they do, well, who cares? I think Abby's plan is the most diplomatic way of handling it w your mom -- and that way everyone has a heads up and isn't expecting steak and lobster...or salmon and chicken...or...bacon.

This really can't be that uncommon nowadays anyway :) Lots of love and good luck :)
