I like the premise... Each entry, a picture and a song that she felt gave her the same feelings. There have been a bunch of nifty blogs I've found just doing that (for example, this one.)
...
Do you guys follow any blogs that aren't written or organized by your own immediate friends and family? What drew you to them and how did you find them (or why do you think blogs of non-buddies are not that interesting to you)?

Mostly for Erin
So a while ago Erin was all, "What are your plans [for the near future]?" and I was all, "Tons of stuff! I'm excited! I am about to type it on the quad blog and I don't want to type twice, so I can just direct you there in like, 20 minutes?" Erin was all, "yeah, I gotcha, you're lazy and you hate me." Except that last part didn't happen. Anyway, I got distracted, and despite my best efforts something else chose to occupy the time set aside for quad-blogging.
It's November 28th. My lease ends in 18 days. I'm packing to move. I'm also studying to re-take the GRE. That's in 5 days. But mostly I'm working full time and trying to get some exercise when it's not cloudy and blustery and 34 degrees out. Oh, and working on grad school applications. This time I've convinced myself that I want to be a school counselor. Haven't figured out what grade levels would be ideal, but um, having a summer vacation would be pretty wicked cool. I'm applying to, in order of application due dates: Wake Forest, U of Hawaii at Hilo, New Mexico St. U., George Fox (in Portland), U. of Miss., and Appalachian State (near where Erin's mom lives!). Wake Forest's program looks the best, but I kinda want to live in Hawaii. :)
So GRE on Dec. 4th, working til the 7th, and then just over a week to finish packing and moving things to storage before heading down to begin the holiday merriment! I'll be taking care of my Grandma from Dec 18th-23rd (so my Uncle Paul can go on a vacation), spending Christmas Eve and Christmas with my family, then driving with Jack to Bethany Beach to hang out in Paul's condo and work on my applications and work out at the condo complex's gym and have torrid love affairs. I'll be back for New Year's, then another week at the beach (PLEASE COME VISIT--YOU ARE ALL WELCOME!!) before driving south for the rest of the Winter. Basil just moved to North Carolina to live with his lady love. They are in Boone (again, shout out to Lori!) and are going to host me for a couple of days while I check out the school and the town. Then driving through Mississippi, hopefully staying in Oxford for a night and scoping out Ole Miss. Then Alabama for a night-a former coworker is moving and invited me to come visit and try to convince the locals that they should start recycling. Apparently they don't even have FACILITIES. Not that they are just too ignorant and/or lazy/. They don't even have the frickin infrastructure necessary. Boo!
After Alabama I'll drive to the Dallas suburbs, stay with my Uncle Lee for a week and get spoiled by good alcohol and constant guitar and piano playing (and work on grad school apps...). Then a week with Alana (26, MBA, home owner, big smart corporate job lady, dog lover), and then Galveston. Galveston is an island in the Gulf of Mexico where my aunt and uncle have a crazy beautiful beach house with no permanent residents. I explained to them my interest in grad school and my need for a "writer's retreat" to be able to focus exclusively on producing great applications. You guys can probably visit me there, too. :)
I'll be in Galveston for most of February. Towards the end of the month I'm going to head back North, and intend to land back in Ithaca on March 1st. A really awesome friend of mine has an extra room that she isn't currently renting out but said she'd be happy for me to come live in. She just bought her first home this year and is painting and redoing things and just making it the coziest little place. I'll be living with Barb probably March 1st-August 1st, during which time I'll pray daily for acceptance letters. By the beginning of Summer I'll hopefully know where the next stop will be!
Phew. How about that update?
Oh! And my psoriasis is getting better!!!! I currently have health insurance and have been going to a dermatologist for professional treatment. Yay!
Looking forward to seeing many of you Dec. 18th-23rd, the 31st-2nd, and perhaps again the 8th or 9th of January!
And now, to bed! In my starry Delia's pajamas from high school. Found them in the basement while packing to move. Score.

Excerpts, Sans Annotations.
Exchanges from this week that reminded me of the quad blog:
#1
Erica: Oh you went to Watkins Mill and know the Scheueremans? You probably know my friend Abby.
Erica’s Peer Gabe: What’s her last name?
Erica: Rotholz. She played volleyball and has a denty face.
Erica’s Peer Gabe: Is she deformed?
#2
LD: At first I thought he (guy she’s hooking up with) might be into her, but then I saw a picture of her on facebook wearing a sweatshirt in a bar and I was like, no worries there. Ew. Can you believe she did that? She wore a hoodie to a bar.
* mental note by Erica to untag 3 or more photos on facebook*

Erica’s Peer Ellen: Ugh. I hate Thanksgiving because I always have to play trivial pursuit with my boyfriend’s family. I hate trivial pursuit and I suck at it.
Erica: Ya, sometimes my family plays scrabble. I love scrabble. It’s easier to play when you’ve been drinking than TP is.
Erica’s Peer Ellen: Ya, or Charades. Charades is ideal when you’re hammered.
Erica: That’s actually like the official game of my college friends, except we play differently where you make up your own categories which serve as hints, and then you act out a phrase or notion. Like, Category: Failure; Thing: Help my skin is blue. Like if you’re a smurf and you feel like a failure for having abnormally colored skin compared to most humans. It’s silly.
Erica’s Peer Ellen: *laughter, perhaps forced*
Erica: Ya, we always seem to play with a few folks who aren’t as acquainted with the group so they’re usually confused. It’s a good way to weed out the

kinda freaking out about this...
is that weird?
ok - so, news from gastonia:
lori's getting married.
it's so weird. she hasn't been married since i was 7. she's marrying a great guy, who's name is lynn. however, his 2 children will be joining the family -- ages 8 and 12!!
so anyway, that is my news. and it's about all i've been able to think about for the past few days. i still need to call lynn to say congrats, but i've been putting it off, as awkward phone calls make me want to vomit.
i do want to say again that i'm actually ok with it -- it's just a lot to process.
i hope life is fabulous for everyone else.
love,
erin
ps. i feel like i only use the blog to announce life-altering occurrences that happen to me. i do, however, read all of your posts, and will try to write generally about my day at some point soon :)
pps - no one 'knows' about this, yet, so if my mom happens to ... call you (?) (it's sad that i have to act as if this could randomly happen, but apparently it has in the past), you probably don't know about it :)

New Boy, Conferences, Laptops
Sorry I missed you while I was down in D.C. all y'all. It was a kind of stressful Sunday for me, and I didn't make it down to my parents house until almost 11:30pm. Around the time I was going to leave, I stopped by Cornell to pick up my laptop - only to find that it had grown legs or wings or SOMETHING and migrated to not-in-my-possession ever again. Blegh. The worst bit was that all of my research was on said laptop, with no backups, so I'll be playing catch up for the next month of so trying to recreate all of my examples and papers. Awesome.
Okay... So that was the bad stuff. The good stuff - already got another laptop. My parents decided that, because at the moment I am way to broke to afford another laptop myself, they would be willing to buy one for me. Score. And copious quantities of gratitude, because if they hadn't done that I would be ten steps FURTHER away from finishing my research, writing up papers, and graduating.
Well, I would talk about the new boy right now, but he's sitting across from me so that seems like a bad plan. Cya all soon!

Lemme know! I miss you guys! I'll admit, I don't really have any new stories to share with y'all (been working a lot, started going back to the gym, started making moon eyes at a new-guy-who-doesn't-know-I'm-alive... And that's been my whole time!) ...But that being said, I'd love to hear YOUR stories!
Hopefully see ya soon!

Things that taste good and don't take long...
1. Saute sliced eggplant sprinkled with salt (or garlic salt) and pepper in olive oil for about 10 minutes, flipping from time to time to cook evenly and make sure nothing burns.
2. Combine these items: some light mayo or may substitute, minced garlic, basil (I used a few shakes of dried, but I bet chopped up fresh would be good too.)
3. Cut up some little tomatoes
4. Toast some bread
5. Slather mayo concoction on bread, add tomatoes, add eggplant, enjoy!
Almost a Rhubarb Fool
1. Bring 1/4 cup of water and 1/4 cup of sugar mixture to a boil until sugar dissolves.
2. Add 1 lb sliced rhubarb (I used frozen cuz I had it. Fresh would be amazing.)
3. Bring back to a boil and simmer, covered, stirring once or twice for 10-12 mins until rhubarb starts to fall apart.
4. Take of the heat and check to see if it needs a few more table spoons of sugar (add 1 at a time til tastes good)
5. Serve with scoop of vanilla ice cream

Life in August
I have come up with a strategy to make moving easier. Instead of freaking out and not knowing what to do with all my stuff when it's time to go, each day I'm getting rid of one thing I don't need. I have gotten a little behind, so today I need to find 4 things of which to rid myself. So far I'm giving away my organization's "Celebrating 60 Years!" mug, my seed collection (seeds are not very good in years subsequent to their intended year anyway), and... haven't figured out the other two yet. There's a Salvation Army bag in the hallway with a few delicate things in it, so I'm thinking some clothes would pad the oddly-shaped vase and "Celebrating 60" mug well. At this rate I should be living a simple, easy to manage life, with no more than I need come moving time... right?
Moving plans: ...
Moving ideas: Driving to Asheville in a few weeks to scope it out, decide if I want to live there next. I will have the lovely company of Ms. Becca Wickizer, and maybe (cross your fingers!) Erin McSpadden!! In truth, Asheville does pretty much constitute a plan. I mean, I moved to Ithaca pretty much on a whim and it was awesome. Asheville has lots of hippie/artist/environmentalist/outdoorsperson cred, and I'm sure it would work out.
In the past couple of months my household here has gone from three women to me and two men. Slow changeover as my women friends have taken steps towards manifesting their full potentials. The dynamic has certainly shifted, and while it is more laid back (which I can appreciate) it is also sometimes reminiscent of Bushwood. A LOT cleaner, and certainly older, more mature guys than that crowd, but you know what I mean? I mean, I think Matt and I were on a similar wavelength there, but...
Jack has lost 3 collars in the past month. When he goes swimming his massive mane gets droopy and they must slip over his head. After much effort to replace the collars and get him new name tags he now proudly wears a brown ribbon around his neck.
Work life: a permanent position opened up in the group home where I had been working as the primary sub. I asked for it, deciding that the flexibility inherent in being "relief" and only committing to shifts on days I wanted to work wasn't as exciting for the fall as it had been for the summer. I also asked for a promotion, had a performance review meeting with my boss, and, hopefully, will be a "Senior Residence Counselor" soon. There's a little bit of a raise, and I'm sure it will look good when applying for other jobs in other places. My boss knows about my Asheville trip, etc. but still agreed that I was deserving of a promotion for the time being.
I saw District 9 last night. Exciting. Made me cringe a few times. Made me like aliens and think Nigerians were scary. I'd recommend it, especially if you're going to the movies with a guy and he doesn't want to see The Time Traveler's Wife with you.
There's more, but I feel like the basics were covered! Time to walk the dog!

Florida Canoeing
It was gorgeous... We went about nine miles down from Kings Landing to the Wekiva Island Marina, past gators and turtles, over giant fish and through black water and red water and beaches... Jeeze. My canoe mate (Chris J.) and I had both never canoed. It was definitely an adventure - the guy who rented us the canoes asked if we'd done it, we told him we'd kayaked, and he kinda paused, suggested we might be biting off more than we could chew, then shrugged and made us just sign a release form.
At first, it was beautiful. Then Chris J. ran me in to a tree full speed. That was less beautiful. Two minutes later, he drove us in to some reeds. Awesome. After about twenty minutes of working on paddling and steering, we were off again - watching turtles sunning on rocks, going under giant spider webs (which my brother and his other friend Chris B. insisted were incredibly poisonous and if we were bitten we'd die,) passing rope swings and going under fallen trees.
Although it was fun the whole way, there were horseflies the size of my fist that bit like they were burning you with a hot poker, and it poured buckets on us for at least two of the nine miles. Still, while it was raining, there were no bugs. Every time my canoe-mate got bitten by a horsefly, he yelled and swatted it and stopped steering, so the canoe would shake, nearly capsize - then we'd crash in to a tree. And then we'd just laugh maniacally, and get started again.
This was four hours of awesome. The only bad thing is that my phone might have bought it - I managed to keep it dry even during the downpours, but it (and my whole purse with it) got soaked when we almost-capsized after Chris J. had one of those banana spiders (which, again, we were all convinced were deadly,) land on his shoulder. His response was to flip out, slap it off him, then throw his oar at it. All I hear from the front is a growl then I'm covered in water and sailing headfirst into a sabal palm. Since my brother and Chris B. were just a turn behind us in the river, we had them grab his paddle and give it to us - but I'm just waiting to see if my phone'll come back from the abyss or not. Here's to hoping!
We also saw a baby alligator asleep on a log... Both cute and scary. :)
Best quotes of the past few days, btw:
"Do not pet the manatee. You will go to jail. Do not attempt to ride the manatee. You will go to jail."
"Why did we pick the double black diamond canoe trip for our first go round?"
"Gah... Why do you suck at canoeing?" "YOU SUCK! This is YOUR fault we're stuck." (This was from my brother and Chris B. after they got wedged between a tree and a log, so that they were blocking the entire river at that point and stuck. About two seconds after this, Chris J. and I slammed in to them (the current was fairly strong, so we got ourselves parallel to them and just hit them sideways, rather than head-on.)
"Wait... So your were so pissed at the spider that you were like, Oh, I don't want this oar any more."

Back Home!!!!
After a teary goodbye with friends in Yamagata, I met my friend in Tokyo to go to Disney sea on my last day/night in Japan. I didn't really want to go to Tokyo, but he seemed like he really wanted to see me, even offered to pay for our hotel room. So since he said he would take care of the hotel room and stuff, I let him do all the planning. I figured he would decide what to do since he was from Tokyo and he wanted to see me. However, when I arrived in Tokyo, this was not the case at all. He didn't have much of a plan at all, and there was no hotel room booked. Since he ddn't have any ideas as to where to go and I had lots of baggage, I suggested we find a hotel or locker to put my stuff in. We then had to go to Ueno station and take the subway up to the cheaper area of town. He described it to me as the "Tokyo Slums". Nice. I told him I didn't care where we stayed, a really cheap place and hostel was fine. And I was willing to pay. So the first place we went was a really dingy dingy "hotel/hostel" but they only had a room for a "couple". I told him I didn't want to share a bed but didn't mind sharing a room. I think he got the point. So anyways, we walked all over town, carrying heavy bags, and we got lost. Neither of us had eaten all day. And I was sick and tired and emotionally drained from the goodbye party the night before. We finally found a hotel and he booked separate rooms for us. I told him it might be better and cheaper if we shared the same room, but he insisted. So at this point it became a little weird. I think he wanted to share a couples room maybe. He also was very quiet and didn't have much to say to me. [I hadn't seen him in over a year, but we had emailed frequently during the time he was away working in Sri Lanka--btw he is a Japanese friend but we spoke in English and Japanese]. Anyways, both of us were really tired and I was starting to get sick but we decided to stick to the plan and go to Disney Sea. It was nice. But I got the impression there that he wanted more than just friends. Anyways, I felt like shit at that point and had no appetite and didn't want to wait in lines. And being around him was depressing because he was not much of a conversationalist at all. Anyways, so my last night in Tokyo was kind of a bomb although Disney sea was cool. The next day I met a couple of friends who were in Tokyo to say goodbye, then I went to the airport. I still was feeling not so great at this point. I also really hate flying and turbulence and the day of my flight was rainy and the day before the typhoon. So I bought and drank my last little bottle of plum wine before boarding the plane so I could be relaxed for take off. We sat on the runway for an hour. I took 2 suddafed PMs so I could pass out and my nose could clear up. The suddafed made my nose clear up too much and it ended up making breathing through my nose a very unpleasant and dry sensation. Take-off was shit. I downed 2 mini bottles of Jim Beam which I had brought with me for such an occasion. The captain said it was dangerous for flight attendants to get up from their seats so it was about 45 minutes until drinks were served. I ordered a scotch and soda. Then I asked for more scotch to go with my soda. I really wanted to just pass out and not wake up again until landing in DC. anyways, even after all that alcohol and drugs, I couldn't pass out. I felt pretty bad. So something gave me the brilliant idea that ordering red wine with my dinner might make me fall asleep. Clearly, I didn't know how drunk I was at this point. As I sat next to my Japanese deaf-mute airplane neighbor, I explained the reason for my excessive drinking by using facial expressions of "scared", "shit", and "crashing plane" we also conversed by writing Japanese. She was a good sport and I was thankful that I didn't have to make conversation and could get away with ridiculous gestures and smiles. At this point I started to feel nauseous. This was maybe around hour 3 of the plane ride. 9.5 hours to go. The sickness got worse and I felt myself developing a fever. So I kept getting up and getting back in my seat. I was restless. Meanwhile there was lots of turbulence. At this point though, I didn't care because I was both a) too drunk to care, and b) too sick to care. Anyways, the drunkenness wore off but I wasn't able to go to sleep at all because I felt so bad. Never again will I take Suddafed PM in hopes of falling asleep...Worthless!!! I told the flight attendants I was sick and got some hot water with lemon! woohooo. Then I felt like puking. so I sat on the floor near the bathroom at the back of the plane. Oh man. It was awful. But eventually, the plane landed, and I got home about 20 hours after leaving Tokyo. And now here I am! living to tell this story. Although I am still sick and they think I might have pig flu, but who knows, I didn't want to pay for the 150$ pig flu test so I just payed $150 for some random prescription drugs instead. I'm on day 4 of being unable to eat food without feeling a little sick. And I have yet to taste a nice American microbrew. So, keep your fingers crossed that by Sat, I will be better!!!!!! It's an absolute mindfuck being back in America right now and I'm finding it a little difficult to adjust to life at home especially after living alone for 2 years. I have only seen 2 friends so far, so I can't wait to see all of you guys because I think it will really do me some good!!! Nicky, will you be coming to MD at all before Oct. 15th? I can't believe I'm leaving again so soon!! Love you all. MWAH!
I've Gotta Feeling...
Because Nicky's quite right - it's been a while since I've seen much up here - here's my go too!
Life's been pretty sweet... At the moment, I'm down in Florida with my brother and two of his friends staying at this resort in Orlando. It's been beautiful - while I couldn't really give a crap about theme parks or what-not, James and I have mostly been just enjoying the Florida sun and doing a little traveling around the state. For example, yesterday we drove about an hour north of Orlando to Blue Springs State Park, which is this nature preserve that hosts a large portion of Florida's manatee population during the winter months. During the summer, it just hosts a bunch of locals going swimming in the 100,000,000 gallons of water that pour of the park's namesake spring - although a manatee did wander up near the springs while we were there! We didn't get to see it, but we did see a lot of large mouth bass, HUGE garr, sunfish, along with getting in a lot of river swimming in perfectly clear water.
Today we were all going to go kayaking in the Wekiwa River, but we didn't realize we had to get in the water by 11:30 am or they wouldn't rent us kayaks - there is a 9 mile downstream ride, then they pick you up and shuttle you back to your car - since they only have one pickup a day at 3:30pm. We're gonna go tomorrow though, and I think today we're just hiking around the Wekiwa River itself - it's this 5 mile hike with another one of those springs at the end of the trail for us to go swimming in! Half of our party (James' friends) just want to do a water park (eh? not horrible, but not AWESOME) so we'll have to see which half of our voting group wins - I feel like James and I, as the people in possession of a car, might just take the day.
As to the "cute boy" factor... Yeah! He's still in the picture. It's a little sad that it won't last that long - he's moving back to Korea at the end of September, and I don't think he has any plans of moving back to the US soon. I'd be a little more miffed - except that I'm ALSO not particular interested in moving to Asia, so I can't pretend this is all him being unreasonable. :)
I'll write a bit more about him later, but he's... I don't know. He's just amazing to be around. Hopefully you guys come to Ithaca before he leaves (set your calendars!) so you can meet him too.
I'm gonna go... We're doing the "what to do today" vote. Cya all on Saturday at Becca's party! I can't wait!!

Hooray for the blog! Boring post from me. I’m extremely happy but doing absolutely nothing of consequence.
We need updates from you Nic! I’m assuming that you’re still loving your new job. Post stuff about your field. I know nothing about it. It’s interesting. So is Miami. I still want to move there. Try to get people to expand the legal market down there.
I’m at the Stone Harbor house with Matt’s family until Sunday. I’m currently on the top (a.k.a. “beer pong”) deck. I’m just came back from the beach because I’m waiting for my new school laptop to be delivered, I can’t print out the “just leave the thing” notice bc there’s no printer here. I’m really enjoying being with Matt’s army of waspy cousins. And pudge, the 2 year old yellow lab that Matt’s family is completely obsessed with. We all went down to the dog beach at dusk to watch him fetch balls in the waves. I also really like Matt’s little cousin Lee, who is 8. I’ve never really had a relationship with a child like this before. We have a lot of the same interests and I really like the gimp bracelet that she made me. I think we’re going shopping for best friend necklaces in town tonight, depending on what her mom says.
The weather has been awesome. I love SH and we found a new wedding venue where we can have an outdoor tent right next to the beach. I think it will be peachy. We have to talk to them about dates. We’ll be here until Sunday at which point we’re returning for Becca W’s party!! We also might return Saturday for Phish at merriweather… depending on what we feel like doing. I’m leaving it up to Matt. Matt's friend Pete has two extra tickets in case anyone is interested.
I quit my job on July 29 and left right after my goodbye happy hour for NYC, and eventually Montreal and Quebec with Mattie. We stayed with his cousins in the city, and various B&Bs throughout Canada. It was rockin. Except that we didn’t end up being able to meet up with Lizzie due to her fam’s amish ways.
I have orientation on the 19th. I don’t want to start, I’d like to continue my current occupation of drinking beer and playing travel scrabble. Once the lt comes I’m going to drink mini bottles of white star (a “thank you for cleaning up after my party” gift from Bec Z) and watch the sunset at the point with Matt.
The photos are
1- This little auberge called Cafe Krieghoff where we stayed in Quebec city.
2- Me at the chute Montemorancy.
3- Me and Matt on the ferry to Levis.
I hope you're all having wonderful wonderful summers. I miss each of you, as well as the group as a whole.
TILLEY: COME FOR HALLOWEEN.
Anyone interested in going up to Ithaca in the autumn time??

From Becca/Abby/Abby's Dad:
Hello,
As some of you may know, I am involved with a non-profit that links schools in Africa with those in the U.S, with the goal of improving lives through improved education and increased understanding across cultures. The Mpambara-Cox Foundation (mcoxfoundation.org) has begun by linking 21 schools in rural southwestern Uganda, home of the founder and president, with primary schools in Maryland and Kentucky.
In one of the Ugandan schools, Kengoma, a building with two classrooms recently collapsed and is now unusable. The Kindergarten and Primary 1 classes met there. Fortunately, it happened on a non-school day and no one was injured. But students have been forced to meet in a church around 2 kms away, and the daily meal the Foundation provides through its "10:30 Porridge Program" (which has increased attendance dramatically) has not been available to students due to a lack of adequate kitchen facilities in the new location. Ugandan government assistance is essentially unavailable - involving difficult bureaucratic channels that take inordinate amounts of time and often end up with unfinished, low-grade buildings.
So I have taken on the challenge of spearheading an effort to rebuild the school. I'd like to invite you and others you know to be partners in the project. The cost of rebuilding the collapsed building is estimated at $5,000 US. If you are interested in helping, please donate $10 (yes, only $10!) and/or forward this request on to a few of your friends who might want to help. We hope to reach the 500 or so people needed (factoring in processing fees) through one another's network of friends. Pictures of the pre-collapsed school and its students can be seen at http://mcoxfoundation.org/
All contributors will receive pictures of the collapsed school building and eventually the new one, along with a simple final report. No contributors will be put on mailing lists. The MCF director will be in Uganda from mid-July to mid-August and I hope she will be able to announce in person to the Kengoma community that funds for the classrooms are available and construction can begin immediately. It will be a very big deal for them.
This is also an experiment of sorts to see if social networking can be used as effectively for humanitarian purposes as it can for spreading jokes and urban legends. So, you can further pseduo-social science research while helping meet an important community and educational need in a very poor country. What more could you want for $10? The research results will be included in the brief final report sent to contributors. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Jim Rotholz

Doug (4:13 am): "Smart like you because grad schools only for people that talk to other grad students that are fuck ups like their grad student selves don't act like"
...and...
Doug (4:52 am): "Im done chasing you I thought you had one thing... Class but I guess not keep doping up and being in grad school someone will love you"
..and...
Doug (4:57 am): "I have no gruge other than you never felt big enough to act like a grown woman but like a coffee drinking cornell groupie"
In his "defense," he was drunk out of his mind, and tried to apologize over and over again the next day, but this isn't the first time he's said some rip-shit mean things to me. What's funny is (until that DAY even,) I had never cheated on him, but right before the text message war, I'd spent a few hours hanging out with the older brother of a friend of mine who is here for the summer - and who is just amazing. I'd been regretting that I couldn't see him since I was still involved with someone else - then that happened. While coincidence is definitely a force, I like the way the events dovetailed into something good.
I did talk to Doug last night for the first time since then. He was still really apologetic and wanted to hang out after he got off of work (around 2am) but it seemed like a bad idea. I am not sure I should even go over to his place today to talk, but I'm kinda worried he doesn't remember that it's over (apparently, in his drunk state, he deletes text messages, so while he knew he's been a jerk, he didn't realize how bad... Or remember that my closing lines included, "It's over, don't call me tomorrow, and go find someone else.")
Eh... We'll see. On a funnier note...
I woke up TERRIFIED this morning around 9:30am, because I just remembered that a friend of mine had asked me to sub for her at her office hours and to grade one assignment for her. I'd offered several weeks ago, because then she had the ability to go home and see her family in Oregon.
When I woke up this morning, I realized that I was probably the biggest asshole in the world, having spent all of last week wandering around, partying, enjoying good new company - and at NO point, heading anywhere near the math building to do her grading or office hours.
Gah.
So I leap out of bed, get dressed (still wearing the "outfit" I chose in less than 5 seconds, a terrifying sight to behold you can be sure,) fight the urge to call Jen and apologize for being an asshole (either she's in Oregon and wouldn't appreciate a call at then-six-thirty-am, or she's back in Ithaca and already knows,) and run downstairs to put on my shoes... When I realize I should check my phone to see when she had called me to remind me that I'd offered to do this.
It was on July 9th. Today is July 13th. Her office hours and grading were (or rather, I know now, ARE) today, tomorrow, and Wednesday.
This has been one more reminder of how I need to keep my affairs a little more organized. I can't even tell how much time has passed between one event and another. Sounds like it's time to start keeping a schedule.
The new guy I'm into works from around 8-10am until somewhere between 6-8pm almost every day. He and his brother are editing a documentary they shot across four months of traveling all over Asia, filming the reactions of both Chinese citizens and neighboring countries to the Olympics and tying them into the rebirth of China as a modern empire. (Btw, the trailer is really nifty to watch.) While that's really cool and all (A self-motivated guy that will make himself work for 8-12 hours a day, every day, on something interesting and purposeful? Impossible!), the work ethic is making me want to work more, which I like a lot.
So hopefully, over the next few weeks, you'll see posts in here about "how great my research is going" rather than my escapades evading my advisor!
Hope you ladies are doing great! Talk to you soon!

Wisdom from the Michael Jackson media frenzy...
He was obviously a very troubled person, a man who was an ego maniac with devastatingly low self esteem, but he could write a song and he could perform the heck out of it.
And this is what we can only hope gets left behind when we all leave the world--the very best of us what we were and will continue to be.

Iran
From imdb.com: In 1970s Iran, Marjane 'Marji' Statrapi watches events through her young eyes and her idealistic family of a long dream being fulfilled of the hated Shah's defeat in the Iranian Revolution of 1979. However as Marji grows up, she witnesses first hand how the new Iran, now ruled by Islamic fundamentalists, has become a repressive tyranny on its own. With Marji dangerously refusing to remain silent at this injustice, her parents send her abroad to Vienna to study for a better life.

A fun-filled late Spring day
This morning the neighbors were playing Jodecy (sp?) or some other such mid-90s R&B loudly from their big white van. They were not in the van. They were in the house. I drank my coffee and Basil ate his breakfast on the porch and we tried to sing along to the words we could remember. We didn't know if it was fun to have an unannounced, unattended block party at 11am or annoying. Then my mechanic showed up and dropped my car off. He did some major work and charged me about 1/4 of the Midas estimate. He's my friend's dad and really hooks us up. He even comes to the house to pick up the car and returns it afterwards!
Laura came home and we all walked (with Jack) to the Farmer's Market. The ATM there didn't work, and Basil and I didn't have any cash, so Laura Sugarwala was Laura Sugarmama so we could buy some vegan, GF macaroons and sprouted lentils.
We walked home, they went to a community choir recital (or something of the sort) and I went for a bike ride to buy potting soil. I potted some plant trimmings that had sprouted roots to make Basil a plant for his room. Did I tell you guys? He moved out of his little studio and in to our house this week. Neat!
Then I went to "The Garden of Love" (a plot of land rented from Cornell, so named because Andrew and I made a pact to not argue/fight while there) and weeded. It was severely overgrown as we had both practically abandoned it when we recently re-abandoned hope for a relationship. I accidentally stepped on and squashed many of the flower seedlings around which I had been attempting to weed. That made me sad. It started to rain. I started getting cold. Jack, who was patiently waiting by my side, did not seem to be enjoying the shower so we left. My friend Alex called and we went to his house to take all his food because he is moving out of town. I did, and ate about a hundred almonds in the process.
Returning home, the kids on the end of the block begged me to make good on my promise to help them plant flowers in front of their house. I hooked them up with a shovel and a trowel and gave them a quick lesson on loosening ground. A half hour later they sent a 4 year old representative to tell me they were done. They had pulled out the weeds and dug holes in the ground. I dug up and broke up the dirt for the next 20 minutes while they ran around like happy maniacs and sang made up songs. Basil came down the block and hung out while each of five different kids chose one of my packets of seeds and spread them around a designated area. The four year old kept asking cute questions--why is that worm there? Is he making our garden dirty? Can you eat flower roots?
After a much-needed shower we settled down in the livingroom and Basil, Laura, Jack and I watched "Over Her Dead Body," which was surprisingly funny! Then a dog walk, an unnecessary late-night snack, and a little blogging. Tomorrow I fly to Charlottesville to see Liz and Trevor and Erica!! YAY!

Wedding Hotel Room Coordination
Let's figure out our hotel accommodations for the wedding!
Erica said that she booked one room, which she and Erin have plans to inhabit. I requested sharing this room, Gwyn said she didn't know if she was in it or should book her own room, and Liz and Trevor are planning to be at that hotel but maybe not in the room. I spoke to Erica today, and given the aforementioned set of circumstances, we thought of proposing 2 rooms, maybe one "quad room" for old times' sake (and so those of us who are single still feel special!!) and then a couples'/others room? I'm guessing that Nicky has some special thing planned, but if not, dude, get in a room! Becca, we are saddened to remember, won't be there (*sniff*). What about Erica Tilley? Does she have a room booked yet? If it is only 6 of us (Erica, Erin, Liz, Trevor, Gwyn and me) I'd be fine with everyone squeezing in one room. OH!!! MATT!! I forgot about Matt. Ooh, sorry Matt. (I do love you, even if I temporarily forgot your existence.) So... seven in a room? Or two rooms? Cast your votes!

Optical Delusion

Abby's google status inspired me to read some Einstein quotes today. I like the idea of an optical delusion that we all have to fight off to make room for some connectivity in our lives, especially in the digital age. Hence, the blog! Digital and connective. Lovely.

TILLEY-MANULIK

The Nuptials Cometh
So I went ahead and booked a room at the Calvert House Historic Inn, as advised by the bride ,
for May 1 and May 2, 2009. We have a quad room reserved with 2 double beds, and I think we
could squeeze in others. The room total is $240 total for both nights, Erin and I are definitely
sleeping there, and there's at least room for 1 extra gal or dude. Let us know if you want a
piece of the action as a bed-dweller or maybe sleeping on the floor in a sleeping bag (we just
have to pay them slightly more, like $10 + tax, to do this)
See you in Annapolis May 2009!!

Gadgets
My computer works again...Yay! But my car is broken...boo :(
Anyways, I was updating my blog and adding all these cool gadgets and I thought we should put some on our blog too. But I am not the administrator so I can't do the settings. Nicky, can we add cool gadgets to the side? Like "excuse of the day" or "vintage art of the day" or "recipe of the day". (see my blog if you are wondering what I'm talking about)
I thought the excuse of the day would be appropriate for all of us, but mainly I had Erica in mind when I saw that one :p. I hope you guys enjoyed the inaguration. Everyone at work has asked me if I watched it.
